Why taxon labels require caution

The formation contains terrestrial, freshwater, and marine evidence across different parts of its section. Fragmentary teeth and bones sold from a broad “Judith River” locality may not support a species-level identification. Ask which anatomical characters, associated material, stratigraphic position, and locality records support the seller's label. Do not convert “tyrannosaurid,” “ceratopsian,” or “hadrosaurid” into a famous genus merely because that name sells better.

Locality and land status

A Montana origin does not mean private land. Request the county, parcel or ranch documentation kept privately where necessary, landowner permission, collector, date, and chain of custody. Federal vertebrate fossils are governed by federal law and are not ordinary commercial collecting material. Tribal land requires the relevant tribal authority; private-land permission cannot substitute for it.

Specimen evidence

• Sharp photographs from all sides with scale and unedited color reference.
• Exact element or tooth attribution and the basis for that conclusion.
• Preparation notes, repairs, filler, composite work, and restoration percentage.
• Locality precision sufficient for verification without publishing sensitive coordinates.
• Custody documents connecting the current specimen to the recorded collection event.

Pricing and comparison discipline

Do not borrow prices from Hell Creek Tyrannosaurus rex, complete skulls, or museum mounts to value an isolated Judith River tooth. Compare like with like: defensible taxonomic level, element, completeness, size, wear, repair, restoration, locality documentation, and actual completed transaction. An auction estimate or seller asking price is not a verified sale.
