Tyrannosaur teeth — especially genuine Tyrannosaurus rex — are among the most coveted and most valuable dinosaur fossils on the commercial market. A single shed T-Rex crown can sell for tens of thousands of dollars. That value attracts fraud, misidentification, and provenance laundering. Because T-Rex is a North American animal, US collecting law is the central issue every buyer must understand.

Not every tyrannosaur tooth is a T-Rex tooth. The market is flooded with teeth labeled "T-Rex" that belong to other theropods — sometimes not even tyrannosaurs.
Thick, robust, D-shaped in cross-section. Fewer, larger denticles (serrations). Found exclusively in Hell Creek, Lance, and equivalent Late Maastrichtian formations (~66-68 mya). Teeth over 2 inches are significant; over 3 inches are exceptional.
More blade-like and laterally compressed than T-Rex. More numerous, finer denticles. Debate exists over whether Nanotyrannus is a valid genus or a juvenile T-Rex — honest sellers disclose this uncertainty.
Earlier tyrannosaur from the Two Medicine and Judith River Formations (~75 mya). Teeth are similar to T-Rex in proportions but generally smaller and from an older geological context.
The most common misidentification. This African theropod has blade-like serrated teeth that resemble tyrannosaur teeth but come from Morocco's Kem Kem beds. No tyrannosaurs ever lived in Africa.
Size
Length is the most visible value driver. A 1-inch crown fragment might sell for $1,500; a 3-inch complete tooth with intact serrations can exceed $20,000. The price curve is exponential, not linear — every additional fraction of an inch adds disproportionately to value.
Serrations (Denticles)
Intact denticles on both carinae (cutting edges) are critical. Worn, chipped, or ground-down serrations dramatically reduce value. Under magnification, natural denticles show wear patterns consistent with feeding — ground-down ones look artificially uniform.
Enamel Quality
Original enamel with natural color variation (browns, tans, occasional blue-grey from mineral replacement) is prized. Sanded or polished enamel looks unnaturally uniform and may conceal restoration.
Root Completeness
A complete, unrestored root can double or triple value. Most T-Rex teeth on the market are crowns only. A tooth with full root and crown, showing natural bone texture and no fabrication, is museum-quality.
Provenance Quality
Hell Creek Formation, private land, with landowner release and chain of custody — this is the gold standard. A tooth with full provenance can sell for 50%+ more than an identical tooth without documentation. Cite: Paleontological Resources Preservation Act (PRPA, 2009).
Carcharodontosaurus Sold as T-Rex
The most common fraud. Moroccan Carcharodontosaurus teeth are often marketed as 'T-Rex from Africa.' No tyrannosaurs ever lived in Africa. Check formation — if it says Kem Kem or Morocco, it is not a tyrannosaur.
Nanotyrannus Marketed as T-Rex
Teeth from Nanotyrannus (or juvenile T-Rex) are sometimes sold as adult T-Rex teeth to inflate the price. The finer denticles and more compressed cross-section are the key distinguishing features.
Composite Teeth
A crown from one specimen glued to a root from another — or a fabricated root sculpted from sand and glue, then painted. UV light reveals both. The glue at the crown-root junction fluoresces differently than fossilized material.
Origin Laundering
'Found on an old ranch, no paperwork' is the #1 way illegally collected public-land T-Rex material enters the market. The Paleontological Resources Preservation Act (2009) makes it clear: vertebrate fossils from federal land cannot be sold. Demand private land documentation or walk away.
Legal: T-Rex teeth collected from private land with the landowner's written permission and proper chain-of-custody documentation. This is the legitimate market — the vast majority of commercial T-Rex material comes from private ranches in Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas.
Illegal: T-Rex material from federal land (BLM, National Forest, National Park), tribal land, or state land where vertebrate fossil collection for commercial sale is prohibited. The Paleontological Resources Preservation Act (2009) established criminal penalties for unauthorized collection of vertebrate fossils from federal land.
Red Flag: Any T-Rex tooth sold without documentation of land type and collection permission. A seller who cannot or will not state the county and state of origin, land type, and provide a landowner release is almost certainly concealing a legal problem.
