Horns and frills are often cracked and filled — this is normal for large bones that have been buried for 66 million years. The honest disclosure of fill percentage, glue, and reconstruction is what separates trustworthy from fraudulent sellers.

Cast Material
Resin casts of horns and teeth sold as real. Light weight and uniform surface texture are giveaway signs. Real fossil bone has pores, natural variation, and mineral staining — casts look too perfect.
Vague Origin Claims
'Private collection,' 'found on a ranch,' or 'old collection, no paperwork' — these are classic ways illegal public-land material enters the market. Demand county and state of the collection site.
Are Triceratops teeth a good beginner fossil?
Yes — genuine shed crowns are affordable ($80–$200), easy to identify, and widely available with documentation from private Hell Creek land. They're one of the best entry points into dinosaur collecting because they're common enough to be accessible but still unmistakably dinosaur.
How is horn material valued?
By size, completeness, and restoration percentage. A horn with disclosed minor stabilization and a natural tip is worth far more than a horn with hidden major reconstruction. Size matters — a 24-inch brow horn is exponentially more valuable than a 6-inch partial.
How do I verify a Triceratops horn is real?
UV light is essential. Real fossil bone absorbs UV differently from modern fill materials. Check for natural bone texture, mineral staining, and matrix adhesion. Demand the preparator's name and restoration notes. If the seller won't provide UV photos, walk away.
Where are Triceratops fossils found?
Almost exclusively in the Hell Creek Formation and equivalent Late Cretaceous rocks of Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas. Any Triceratops material claimed from outside this region should be treated with extreme skepticism.
