Short answer: shill bidding generally means bidding used to inflate price or apparent demand without genuine buying intent. A bid pattern can justify review, but public activity alone rarely proves who controlled an account or why a bid was placed.
Self-bidding: Seller creates second account, bids on own listing. If shill wins β cancels and relists.
Friend/family: Seller asks someone to bid. Same pattern β inflates price, never completes.
Bidding ring: Multiple sellers collude, bidding on each other's listings for artificial competition.
Account relationships
A platform may examine device, network, payment, address, or contact overlap subject to its policy and applicable law. Shared data can have innocent explanations.
Bid concentration
Repeated bidding on one seller, limited purchase history, or frequent nonpayment can support review but is not conclusive alone.
Cancel and relist history
Preserve dates when the same object is repeatedly won, cancelled, and relisted.
Price progression
Record the sequence and timing of bids. Time of day or round numbers alone are weak signals.
Seller communications
Save messages about reserve prices, bidder identities, cancellations, or offers made after an auction.
Set a maximum price from the specimen and evidence, not from other biddersβ behavior. Do not accuse a named person publicly from a pattern alone. Preserve the listing and bid history, then report the concern to the auction operator and follow its published rules.
