Ancient lake (lacustrine) deposits laid down in a series of intermontane lakes. The fine laminated limestone preserves fish, insects, plants, and even birds in extraordinary detail.
Knightia (state fossil of Wyoming), Diplomystus, Phareodus, Priscacara, fossil palm fronds, insects, and rare birds and bats.
Green River fish are among the few legal-to-collect vertebrate fossils because most come from private commercial quarries (notably the Fossil Lake / Kemmerer area). Demand a quarry name and documentation. The '18-inch layer' and split-fish slabs are common; museum-grade '3-D' fish and rare species command premiums.
