Provenance is the documented history of where a fossil came from and who owned it. The Provenance Score (0–100) measures how completely and credibly a listing documents its origin. It is one of five trust dimensions on every listing — and the most important for legal safety.
Example: Provenance 92/100 — Private land, Niobrara County, Wyoming, Morrison Formation. Landowner release uploaded. Prior ownership chain verified. Export not applicable.
Each factor contributes up to ~6.7 points. Missing high-risk disclosures (like land type for a vertebrate fossil) cap the score and may trigger admin review.
