Pause when the venue changes

A request to use direct messages, bank transfer, cryptocurrency, gift-card payment, or an unfamiliar checkout can be legitimate or risky. Urgency, secrecy, a large unexplained discount, a changed payee, and refusal to document the exact fossil are reasons to stop and verify—not proof about a seller’s intent.

Five questions before moving

Who is the counterparty? Match the payee, seller name, business address, contact details, and invoice. Independently find the business’s official contact channel rather than relying only on details in a message.
What exactly is being sold? Preserve the original listing and require an invoice that identifies the exact specimen, dimensions, price, disclosed restoration, provenance representations, shipping terms, and return terms.
What payment recourse remains? Read the current rules of the marketplace and payment method. Do not assume a transfer, wallet, payment app, or card transaction has escrow, chargeback, inspection, or refund coverage.
Can the provenance be tested? Cross-check locality, formation, collection date, land status, ownership transfers, permits, and export/import records with their issuers where possible. Consistent-looking paperwork is not independent verification.
Why is the venue changing? Ask for the reason in writing. A discount may reflect lower fees, but it may also shift risk to the buyer. Compare the savings with the value of any rights being surrendered.

Preserve evidence without overclaiming

Keep the original URL, listing, photographs, headers, messages, invoice, payment record, tracking, and unboxing documentation. Report suspicious conduct through the service that actually handled the listing or payment.
