The most common excuse for missing provenance: "old collection" or "estate find." Sometimes true — often fabricated to bypass documentation requirements.
Genuine old collections exist. But the claim itself proves nothing. Without documentation, "old collection" is indistinguishable from "recently smuggled." Jurassic Depot requires documentation regardless of age claim.
Genuine Old Collection
Fabricated Old Collection
Checks verify formation actually exists in claimed country. Hell Creek only in US. Morrison only in US. Solnhofen only in Germany.
'Private land' claims impossible in countries prohibiting private fossil ownership (Mongolia, China). Cross-referenced against fossil law database.
Fossil supposedly collected in 1975 but formation inaccessible until 1995 = impossible timeline.
Seller's declared countries matched against origins. Mongolia source + 'old US collection' claim = flagged.
"Old collection, no documents" is not accepted for high-value, vertebrate, dinosaur, or restricted-origin fossils. At minimum required: collector identity, approximate collection date, collection location (country/state). Claims without even this minimal information are blocked.
