Overview
Hell Creek is less a single site than a vast spread of eroding badlands in eastern Montana and the neighboring Dakotas and Wyoming. It is the most storied dinosaur dig country in the world: the rocks here preserve the final two million years of the Age of Dinosaurs, right up to the asteroid impact that ended it. Barnum Brown collected the first Tyrannosaurus rex from these beds in 1902, and the area has produced T. rex after T. rex ever since.
Geology
The Hell Creek Formation is a sequence of river channel sandstones and floodplain mudstones deposited on a humid coastal lowland at the very end of the Cretaceous. Its top is capped by the K–Pg boundary clay — the thin layer marking the asteroid impact — which makes Hell Creek one of the best places on Earth to study a mass extinction frozen in rock.

Hell Creek is working dig country, not a single visitor attraction. The badlands themselves are striking exposures of tan and gray rock, but the dinosaurs you'll see are in regional museums and field-station displays. Several outfits and museums run pay-to-dig programs on private ranches, where participants help excavate real fossils under supervision.
Famous Finds
The two most valuable dinosaur skeletons ever sold — 'Sue' and 'Stan,' both Tyrannosaurus rex — came from Hell Creek-aged rocks. Triceratops, Edmontosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, and the dromaeosaur Dakotaraptor are all part of the Hell Creek fauna, making it the textbook example of an end-Cretaceous ecosystem.
Visiting
There's no single 'Hell Creek park,' though Makoshika State Park near Glendive, Montana offers public badlands and fossil displays. To dig, join a reputable museum or commercial field program. Always confirm the land status of any program before participating.

Getting there
Eastern Montana is remote. Glendive (Makoshika SP) is reachable via I-94. Most dig programs operate from ranch bases near Jordan, Baker, or Fort Peck — typically a long drive from Billings (~4–5 hours) or Bismarck. A high-clearance vehicle helps on ranch roads.
